About EC

In 1998, the Irish – Austrian Society organised the first nationwide annual German language essay competition.

Owing to the success of the essay competition over many years, in which each year almost three hundred students participated and the outstanding success of the summer courses in Austria for the winners, the Society has decided, with the collaboration of the Austrian Embassy in Dublin, to continue to award scholarships for students of German.

The Scholarships comprise of air travel. Tuition in German and board and accommodation for two weeks in the ISK - Internationale Sprachkurse GmbH in Salzburg, which is a well known centre for students of German under the patronage of the University of Salzburg.

Essays (in German, with Name, School, Address and Age) are to be approximately 200 – 250 words, in length and are judged by university lectures nominated by the Austrian Embassy in Dublin. Essays are judged entirely on their written content.

The name of the winners are announced at a reception at the Austrian Embassy together with press coverage of winners and their schools. All other students receive certificates of competency.

The Irish – Austrian Society believes this annual essay competition is a major contribution to Ireland’s Education system and hopes to continue the programme for many years so that students of German from all over Ireland may compete for these wonderful scholarships.
