The 2012 German language essay competition is the 15th annual competition, organized by the Irish Austrian Society in collaboration with the Austrian Embassy in Dublin. The Scholarships will be awarded in 2012 to students of German.

The Scholarships will comprise air travel, tuition in German, board and accommodation for two weeks in the ISK – International Sprachkurse in Salzburg, which is a well known center for students of German under the patronage of the University of Salzburg (www.deutschkurse-salzburg.com)

Essays (in German) should be approximately 200 – 250 words in length and should reach the office of the Irish Austrian Society on or before 28th March 2012. We ask that all submissions be sent via Email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Alternatively, submissions can also be sent by post to Irish Austrian Society, c/o Austrian Embassy Commercial Section, 2nd Floor, Merrion Centre, Nutley Lane, Dublin 4, c/o Ulrike Schoeller. Name, address, date of birth and current class in school of the student must be stated. We also require the name and address of the school and the name of the German Teacher.

 

Essays will be judged by university lecturers nominated by the Austrian Embassy in Dublin and only pupils, with non German speaking parents will be considered. Essays will be judged entirely on their written content and embellishment, drawings, etc. will not be taken into consideration. Typed entries are acceptable. The course in Salzburg will run from 8. July till 20. July 2012.

In addition to the Scholarship, the first and second placed students of the 5th and 6th year will receive a trophy:

 

“St. Feargal” Trophy

Bishop of Salzburg and Patron Saint, Feargal is perhaps the most famous Irishman associated with the city

 

“Dr. Otto Glaser” Trophy

Dr. Otto Glaser, past president of the Irish Austrian Society, started the Essay Competition in 1998 and guided it for eight years.

We have named the Perpetual Trophies after these distinguished people, as each of them brought great learning and culture to their new homelands. This year we will also be offering a price for the School with the most essays submitted. This price will be a

Year’s subscription for the Austrian journal “Österreich Spiegel”

Specifically designed to support schools and German language teachers. The journal is sponsored by the Austrian Institute in Vienna. The names of the winners will be announced end of April. This will be followed by a Reception at the Austrian Embassy. Other students will receive Certificates of Competency. I hope very much that your students of German will participate in this 15th competition and am entirely at your disposal for any further information you may require.
