History Lecture 15 April: Irish commanders and courtiers in Austrian service during the eighteenth century

This lecture is the third in the series on Irish historical connections with Austria given by the IAS president, Dr Declan M. Downey.

Based on his research and publications, this illustrated presentation focuses on Irish émigrés and those of Irish origin who contributed to the liberation of Hungary and the Balkans from Ottoman occupation during the reign of Emperor Charles VI, and to the revival of Austrian fortunes under Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Joseph II.

The consolidation of their position in the Imperial Court through their military, diplomatic and administrative service as well as their strategic marriages and patronage networks will be explored.

A video recording of this lecture is available on request.
